Skill Level:   Easy

Stitches Used: slst (slip stitch), ch (chain), sc (single crochet), scdec (decrease single crochet).

Size H/8/5mm Crochet Hook for all projects, size F/5/3.75 Crochet Hook for Penguin beak and for attaching hair.

Supplies for Pumpkin:  Red Heart Super Saver-½ oz white yarn; 1 oz orange yarn; small amount of green yarn for collar; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features, small amount of black yarn for shoes; 1 oz yarn for hair, 2 small eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.

For Penguin:  Red Heart Super Saver-½  oz white yarn; 1½ oz black yarn, small amount of orange yarn; 1 oz any color yarn for hair; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features; 2 eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.

For Martian:  Red Heart Super Saver-½  oz white yarn; 2 oz (any color) yarn; small amount of black yarn; 1 oz needlepoint wool for hair; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features; 2 eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.

Gauge: 4 sc per inch; 5 sc rows per inch.

Directions for Doll:

Legs for all dolls-using colors as shown

Rnd. 1: ch5, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook; sc in next 2 ch; 4sc in next sc; going down opposite side of beginning ch5, sc in next 2 ch; 2sc in last ch, join with slst; do not turn.   12 sc

Rnd. 2: ch1, 2sc in same st; sc in next 4 sc; 2sc in next 2 sc; sc in next 4 sc; 2sc in next sc; join with slst; do not turn.         16 sc

Rnd. 3: ch1, sc in each sc, join with slst, do not turn.         16 sc

Rnd. 4: repeat rnd. 3; fasten off.     16 sc

Sew top of shoe closed, stuff leg with fiber fill and set aside.

Insert leg into leg hole, make sure shoes are pointing forward, with right sides facing, whip stitch leg to leg hole.

Hair (for girl): Cut about 100-4 inch strips of yarn.

With same color yarn…wrap yarn around 2 fingers, 3 times, tie strip of yarn tightly to center of wrapped yarn, creating 2 inch loops.  Starting at 5th round above neck; insert strip through sc at side of head and tie tightly.  Repeat this process until bottom row is filled.  Moving up the head, skip 2 rounds and start next row of hair in following rnd.  Repeat this process until the head is covered as desired.

Costumes:

Pumpkin: with orange-make 6 panels 

Rnd. 1: ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 sc; ch1, turn.   4 sc

Rnd. 2: 2sc in first sc; sc in next 2 sc; 2sc in last sc; ch1, turn.   6 sc

Rnd. 3: sc in each sc, ch1, turn.    6 sc

Rnd. 4: 2sc in first sc; sc in next 4 sc; 2sc in last sc; ch1, turn.   8 sc

Rnd. 1: with right side facing, attach green to top of pumpkin, ch1, sc in same st; 29 sc around top of pumpkin; ch1, do not turn.    30 sc

Rnd. 2: sc in first sc and in each sc; ch1, turn.   30 sc

Rnd. 3: in back loops, sc in first sc and in each sc; join with slst; do not turn.   30 sc

Rnd. 4: ch3 (counts as first dc), dc in next 4 sc; ch3; turn.   5 dc

Rnd. 5: holding last loop of each dc back on hook; dc in next 4 dc, yo, pulling hook through all loops when completing 4th dc; fasten off.

Pumpkin Hat: with orange

Leaving a tail at the beginning, ch6; slst in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch; fasten off, leaving a tail at the end.

Position stem to center of hat, pull tails through hat from right side to wrong side and tie securely to hat.

Using same tails from stem, position hat on head of doll, pull one tail through head of doll and tie tails securely to head of doll.

Penguin Costume

Making 5 black panels and 1 white panel

Follow rnds. 1-26 of pumpkin costume directions, do not fasten off after rnd. 26.

Rnds. 27-34: repeat rnd. 3.   8 sc

Rnd. 35: repeat rnd 3; fasten off, leaving a 25 inch tail.   8 sc

Assemble as for pumpkin; position white panel in center of 3-panel section.

Sew 3 panel sections from rnd. 12 to 35 and from rnd. 1 to 2.

Turn penguin costume to right side, attach black yarn to any sc; ch1; sc in same st, 47sc around bottom, join with slst, do not turn.    48 sc

Ch1; sc in same sc and in each sc around; join with slst to first sc; fasten off.  48 sc

Penguin Hat: with black

Repeat rnds. 1-8 of pumpkin hat, do not fasten off after rnd. 8.    40 sc

Rnds. 9-10: repeat rnd. 5 of pumpkin hat; join with slst at end of rnd. 10, fasten off.

Beak-with orange, using F hook:

Rnd. 1: attach orange to any sc on hat in back loop; ch1, sc in same sc and in next 5 sc; ch1, turn.     6 sc

Martian Costume-any color choice

Repeat pattern rnds. 1-48 of  pumpkin costume.

Attach yarn to any sc at top of costume, 24sc around top, join with slst to first sc; fasten off.

Make 2 additional arms, 4 inches long, sew additional arms at rnd. 22 on costume, directly below armholes.

Helmet:

Repeat rnds. 1-6 of pumpkin hat.

Rnd. 7: sc in first 4 sc; 2sc in next; *sc in next 4 sc; 2sc in next sc; repeat from *to* around.   48 sc

Rnd. 8: sc in each sc; join; ch1, turn.   48 sc

Rnd. 9: sc in same st; sc in next 35 sc; ch1, turn.    36 sc

Rnd. 10: repeat rnd. 9 for 3 inches.     36 sc

Rnd. 12: sc in 36 sc; ch12; join with slst to first sc; ch1; do not turn.

Hair: (for boy)

Wrap yarn around two fingers, you will need about 150-200 (4”) strands. Attach yarn to head starting at bottom, about five rnds. above neckline; insert hook, pull yarn loop through a sc; then pull yarn through loop (as with hooking a rug).  Continue this process on every other rnd. (every rnd. at top of head) until head is covered as desired.

Trick or treat bags are made from a 6 ¼ inch x 2 ¼ inch piece of felt; folded in half and sewn up the sides (no seam allowance), turn to right side.  A 6” strip of felt is tacked on the seam side for handles and then add a Halloween sticker to the finished bag.
