Skill level: Easy
Stitches used: sl, ch, sc.
Size H aluminum crochet hook for all projects, size F aluminum crochet hook for penguin beak and for attaching hair.
Supplies for Pumpkin: ½ ounce white, 4 ply acrylic yarn; 1 ounce orange, 4 ply acrylic yarn; small amount of green , 4 ply acrylic yarn for collar; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features, small amount of black, 4 ply acrylic yarn for shoes; 1 ounce 4 ply acrylic yarn for hair, 2 small eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.
For Penguin: ½ ounce white, 4 ply acrylic yarn; 1 ½ ounce black, 4 ply acrylic yarn, small amount of orange, 4 ply acrylic yarn; 1 ounce 4 ply acrylic yarn for hair; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features; 2 eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.
For Martian: ½ ounce white, 4 ply acrylic yarn; 2 ounces (any color), 4 ply acrylic yarn; small amount of black, 4 ply acrylic yarn; 1 ounce needlepoint wool for hair; small amount of black and red yarn or embroidery thread for facial features; 2 eyes; needle and thread; yarn needle, fiber fill, safety pin.
Gauge: 4 sc per inch; 5 sc rows per inch.
Directions for Doll:
Legs- start with black
Rnd. 1: ch 5, 2 sc in second ch from hook; sc in next 2 ch; 4 sc in next sc; going down opposite side of beginning ch 5, sc in next 2 ch; 2 sc in last ch, join with sl st; do not turn. 12 sc
Rnd. 2: ch 1, 2 sc in same st; sc in next 4 sc; 2 sc in next 2 sc; sc in next 4 sc; 2 sc in next sc; join with sl st; do not turn. 16 sc
Rnd. 3: ch 1, sc in each sc, join with sl st, do not turn. 16 sc
Rnd. 4: repeat rnd. 3; fasten off. 16 sc
Rnd. 5: attach (orange for pumpkin or black for penguin or color for Martian) yarn in 12th sc, ch 1, sc in same sc; sc in next 9 sc; skip next 6 sc; join with sl st to beginning sc; do not turn this or the following rnds. 10 sc
Rnd. 6: ch 1, sc in same sc; sc in next 9 sc; do not join, mark beginning sc with safety pin. 10 sc
Rnd. 7: repeat rnd 6 for 5 inches; fasten off, leaving a 15 inch tail for sewing leg to body.
Sew top of shoe closed, stuff leg with fiber fill and set aside.
Repeat rnds. 1-7 for second leg.

Rnd. 1: ch 2; 5 sc in second ch from hook; do not turn this or the following rnds, do not join, mark beginning sc with safety pin. 5 sc

Insert leg into leg hole, make sure shoes are pointing forward, with right sides facing, whip stitch leg to leg hole.
Stuff body of doll; weave needle through last rnd. and pull thread tight to close opening, darn any exposed opening if necessary.
Hair (for girl): Cut about 100-4 inch strips of yarn.
With same color yarn…wrap yarn around 2 fingers, 3 times, tie strip of yarn tightly to center of wrapped yarn, creating 2 inch loops. Starting at 5th round above neck; insert strip through sc at side of head and tie tightly. Repeat this process until bottom row is filled. Moving up the head, skip 2 rounds and start next row of hair in following rnd. Repeat this process until the head is covered as desired.
Costumes:
Pumpkin: with orange-make 6 panels
Rnd. 1: ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and in next 3 sc; ch 1, turn. 4 sc

Rnd. 3: in back loops-sc in first sc and in each sc; join with sl st; do not turn. 30 sc

Position stem to center of hat, pull tails through hat and tie securely to hat.
Using same tails from stem, position hat on head of doll, pull one tail through head of doll and tie tails securely to head of doll.
Penguin Costume:
Making 5 black panels and 1 white panel
Follow rnds. 1-26 of pumpkin costume directions, do not fasten off after rnd. 26.
Rnds. 27-34: repeat rnd. 3. 8 sc
Rnd. 35: repeat rnd 3; fasten off, leaving a 25 inch tail. 8 sc
Assemble as for pumpkin; position white panel in center of 3-panel section.
Sew 3 panel sections from rnd. 12 to 35 and from rnd. 1 to 2.
Turn penguin costume to right side, attach black yarn to any sc; ch 1; sc in same st, 47 sc around bottom, join with sl, do not turn. 48 sc
Ch 1; sc in same sc and in each sc around; join with sl st to first sc; fasten off. 48 sc
Penguin Hat: with black
Repeat rnds. 1-8 of pumpkin hat, do not fasten off after rnd. 8. 40 sc

Beak-with orange, using F hook:

Martian Costume-any color choice
Repeat pattern rnds. 1-48 of pumpkin costume.
Attach yarn to any sc at top of costume, 24 sc around top, join with sl st to first sc; fasten off.
Make 2 additional arms, 4 inches long, sew additional arms at rnd. 22 on costume, directly below armholes.
Helmet:
Repeat rnds. 1-6 of pumpkin hat.
Rnd. 7: sc in first 4 sc; 2 sc in next; *sc in next 4 sc; 2 sc in next sc; repeat from asterisks. 48 sc
Rnd. 8: sc in each sc; join; ch 1, turn. 48 sc

Hair: (for boy)
Wrap yarn around two fingers, you will need about 150-200 (4 inch) strands. Attach yarn to head starting at bottom, about five rnds. above neckline; insert hook, pull yarn loop through a sc; then pull yarn through loop (as with hooking a rug). Continue this process on every second rnd. (every rnd. at top of head) until head is covered as desired.
Trick or treat bags are made from a 6 ¼ inch x 2 ¼ inch piece of felt; folded in half and sewn up the sides (no seam allowance), turn to right side. A 6 inch strip of felt is tacked on the seam side for handles and then add a sticker to the finished bag.
