Scrappy Hat-Free Crochet Pattern


 

This hat cracks me up!  It’s a fun hat for kids and adults!  It’s perect for a snow ball fight or for the downhill.  It’s a fairly easy pattern and can be worked up very quickly.

Skill Level: Beginner-Easy

Stitches Used: ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch), sc (single crochet), dec sc (decrease sc).

Supplies: Size I Crochet Hook, 2 ounces Red Heart Super Saver (Black), approximately 2 ounces scrap yarn cut into 776- 4″ lengths-mixed colors, optional-latch hook.

Note: wrap scrap yarn around a 2″ cardboard, cut in half, or precut rug yarn will also

work.

For a smaller size, you can use a lighter weight yarn and smaller hook.  This pattern is very easy to adjust for size.

Gauge: 6 sc = 2″, 6 sc rows = 2″

Directions

Rnd. 1: with Black, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch rom hook, do not join, mark beginning sc, in this and following rnds.          8 sc

Rnd. 2: working in back loops, 2 sc in each sc around.        16 sc

Rnd. 3: working in back loops, sc in each sc around, increase evenly by 8 sc.     24 sc

Rnds. 4-5: repeat rnd. 3.         32, 40 sc

Rnd. 6: working in back loops, sc in each sc around.         40 sc

Rnds. 7-9: repeat rnd. 3.       48, 56, 64 sc

Rnds. 10-13: repeat rnd. 6.          64 sc

Rnd. 14: repeat rnd. 6, join to beginning sc, ch 1., do not turn, in this or following rnds.        64 sc

Rnd. 15: working in back loops, sc in first 10 sc, working in front loops, sc in next 12 sc, working in back loops, sc in next 20 sc, working in front loops, sc in next 12 sc, working in back loops, sc in next 10 sc, join to beginning sc, ch 1.            64 sc

Rnd. 16: working in top loops, sl st in each sc around, join to beginning sc, fasten off.       64 sl st

First Ear Flap

Rnd. 16: attach yarn in back loops of 11th sc on rnd. 15, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 11 sc, ch 1, turn.           12 sc

Rnd. 17: working in front loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 10 sc, ch 1, turn.          11 sc

Rnd. 18: working in back loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 9 sc, ch 1, turn.            10 sc

Rnd. 19: working in front loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 8 sc, ch 1, turn.     9 sc

Rnd. 20: working in back loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 7 sc, ch 1, turn.      8 sc

Rnd. 21: working in front loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc, ch 1, turn.       7 sc

Rnd. 22: working in back loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc, dec sc over next 2 sc, ch 1, turn.           5 sc

Rnd. 23: working in front loops, dec sc over first 2 sc, sc in next sc, dec sc over next 2 sc, fasten off.             3 sc

Second Ear Flap

Rnd. 16: skip next 20 sc on rnd. 15, attach yarn in back loop of next sc, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 11 sc, ch 1, turn.             12 sc

Rnds. 17-23: repeat rnds. 17-23 of First Ear Flap.

Finishing

Rnd. 1: attach yarn in first sl st on rnd. 16, sl st in first 10 sl st, working down side of ear flap, from rnd. 17 to rnd. 23, sc in end of each row, *work 1 dec sc over 3 sc at bottom of ear flap, ch 40, sl sl in 2nd ch from hook and in next 38 ch, sl st in same sc on bottom of ear flap, working up side of ear flap, from rnd. 23 to rnd. 17, sc in end of each row*, sl st in next 20 sl st, repeat from * once, sl st in next 10 sc st, join, fasten off.

Using a latch hook or crochet hook, starting at bottom of hat and working around, attach yarn strips to front loop of any sc (like fringe). Repeat the process until yarn strips have been attached to each st.
