Santa's Elf, Boy-Free Crochet Pattern

Santa’s little helper….this is the pattern for the little boy elf!  The matching little girl can be found under the “Little Angel” pattern.

Use a plastic Easter egg or fiberfill!

Skill Level: Easy

Supplies: Size F aluminum crochet hook, large plastic Easter egg, yarn needle, 3 yds. of  Bernat

Boa yarn, about 1/4 oz. red or green or desired color 4 ply worsted

weight yarn, 1/4 oz. pink 4 ply worsted weight yarn, embroidery thread or yarn for  facial features.

Stitches used: ch, sl st, sc, dc, dec sc, pc (popcorn stitch, work 5 dc, remove hook from

last loop, insert hook in first dc and pull last loop through).

Gauge: 4 sc per inch, 5 sc rows per inch.

Directions for arms and legs-all people.

Rnd. 1: leaving a 10 inch tail, ch 25, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, fasten

off leaving a long tail.

Shoes and hands for all people.

Rnd. 1: Attach yarn at last st in leg, work 1 pc, fasten off leaving a tail to sew pc stitch closed.

Directions for body of Santa helper and boy

Rnd. 1: ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join this or following rnds; mark beginning sc. 8      sc.

Rnd. 2: 2 sc in first sc and in each sc around. 16 sc

Rnd. 3: sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next sc; 2 sc in next sc*; repeat from asterisk around.     24 sc

Rnd. 4: sc in first 2 sc; 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next 2 sc; 2 sc in next sc*; repeat from asterisk

around. 32 sc

Rnd. 5: sc in first sc and in each sc around. 32 sc

Rnds. 6-10: repeat rnd. 5, join with sl st to beginning sc at end of rnd. 10; fasten off. 32 sc

Attach legs: tie legs, spaced evenly at the 5th rnd of body by pulling tails through body

and tie securely.

Rnd. 11: In front loops; attach Bernea Boa with sl st; ch 1, sc in same st and sc in each sc around;

join with sl st; fasten off. 32 sc

Rnd. 11: In back loops; attach pink with sl st; ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; do not

join this or the following rnds. 32 sc

Rnd. 12: sc in first 2 sc; dec sc over next 2 sc; *sc in next 2 sc; dec sc over next 2 sc*; repeat

from asterisk around. 24 sc

Rnd. 13: sc in first sc and in each sc around. 24 sc

Rnds. 14-18: repeat rnd 13. 24 sc

Attach arms: tie arms evenly spaced at rnd 14 directly above the legs.

Insert egg into body.     (note-may use fiberfill)

Rnd. 19: sc in first sc; dec sc over next 2 sc; *sc in next sc; dec sc over next 2 sc* repeat from

asterisk around. 16 sc

Rnd. 20: dec sc over first 2 sc; *dec sc over next 2 sc*; repeat from asterisk around; join with sl

st to beginning sc; fasten off leaving a long tail.        8 sc

Finishing: with yarn needle, darn top of head closed with yarn from tail at end of rnd 20.

Rnd. 2: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 20 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 22 sc

Rnd. 3: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 18 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 20 sc

Rnd. 4: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 16 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 18 sc

Rnd. 5: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 14 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 16 sc

Rnd. 6: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 12 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 14 sc

Rnd. 7: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 10 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 12 sc

Rnd. 8: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 8 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 10 sc

Rnd. 9: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 6 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 8 sc

Rnd. 10: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 4 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 6 sc

Rnd. 11: dec sc over first 2 sc; sc in next 2 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. 4 sc

Rnd. 12: dec sc over first 2 sc; dec sc over last 2 sc; ch 1 turn. 2 sc

Rnd. 13: dec sc over 2 sc; fasten off leaving a tail to sew up center.

Sew center seam.

Trim: attach Boa yarn with sl st at bottom of hat; ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around; fasten

off.

Sew or tack hat to top of head.

Directions for little boy hat

Rnd. 1: ch 15; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1, turn. 14 sc

Rnd. 2: in back loops; sc in first sc and in each sc across; ch 1, turn. 14 sc

Rnds. 3-24: repeat rnd 2; fasten off at end of rnd 24 leaving a tail to sew up center. 14 sc

Finishing: Sew up center seam.  Sew around top of hat about 1/4 inch from top edge of hat; pull stitches tight to gather top together; lock stitch closed.

Sew or tack hat to top of head.
